FREE distance-based certificate program for research managers, nurses and coordinators

Dear Colleague,

You may recall that last April you responded to a survey to examine the level of interest in distance-based education for study coordinators working at international sites. This survey was conducted in preparation for a grant proposal to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. I am very pleased to inform you that this grant has been funded by the NIH Fogarty International Center! The program is called PERC (Providing Education for Research Coordinators, PERC), and will be offered free of charge to research nurses, clinical research coordinators or managers who work at research sites outside of the United States and who meet program requirements. The program will also include a research component to evaluate its effectiveness and will fill a gap in availability of training programs to prepare international study coordinators to initiate, manage, and coordinate complex clinical studies, ensuring maintenance of high scientific and ethical standards and adherence to regulatory requirements.

The certificate program will include four required courses: (a) Overview of Historical, Ethical, and Cultural Issues in Clinical Research; (b) Overview of Research Methods and Regulatory Processes in Clinical Research; (c) Overview of Clinical Site Operations and Management; and (d) Teaching Strategies. A fifth (optional) course (Issues in Clinical Research) will also be offered. The four courses will be offered consecutively over a 30 week period (with 2 weeks between each course) beginning in January, 2010. Each course will require approximately 4 hours of time each week and will be offered using distance-education strategies (including internet, materials on compact disks, and notebooks).

I am sending you information about the program since you responded to the survey and indicated that you may be interested in taking these distance-based courses. I am attaching to this email a flyer about the program, a letter describing the program, and for those who are interested, an application and consent form. The deadline for application isNovember 15, 2009 and the first of the four required certificate courses will begin in mid-January 2010. I would also appreciate your helping us to spread the word about this exciting opportunity to other research coordinators at international sites where you are working or where you have contacts.
